The client
Our client is a global premium food manufacturer with more than 50 master franchisees and more than 1,000 franchise partners and retailers in Europe, Asia, Africa and the USA.
The project
The client commissioned us with the translation of a total of 87 CSV files, i.e. around 40,000 words, for his online shop from English to Japanese. The final translation of the “backend strings” was needed within four weeks and in the source format.
The challenge
The translation of “backend strings” requires a lot of experience since the content to be translated is embedded in “tags” and “variables” which must not be translated or changed, respectively. Furthermore, the files contained a lot of repetitions and were partly already in Japanese.
The implementation
- Step 1: In a briefing, we agreed with the client on how to handle the tags, variables and links and on what is to be translated and what is not. In order to ensure a consistent translation of the terms, we carried out the translation in a CAT tool (computer-assisted translation).
- Step 2: We engaged a Japanese specialized translator with more than 15 years of professional experience in the field of software localizations who was both familiar with the specific e-commerce terminology and the notation of “backend strings”. Prior to starting, the translator was given a comprehensive briefing.
- Step 3: We exported the finished translation and converted it back to the CSV format (using UTF-8-coding to ensure that the Japanese characters would later be correctly displayed in the online shop). The used terminology was saved and linked to the client’s account.
The result
Our client received the finished translation in the requested form and quality. The files could be implemented into the existing systems without any problems. By using a CAT tool and subsequently saving the respective terminology, we ensured that the translation is not only consistent in this project but will also be consistent in all follow-up projects.
