European patent languages

The three official languages recognized by EPO are English, French, and German. Accordingly, the safest option is to translate the application documents and the patent itself to one of these languages. They are enough for the patent application to be reviewed and the IP rights to be granted by the agency (presuming other, non-linguistic criteria are met, of course).

After the grant has been issued, however, a number of European countries will still require translations to their local languages in order to validate the patent in their jurisdiction. In other words, after EPO has granted you a patent, you still need to translate parts of it and submit in some of the countries of Europe for these countries to accept it.

Below is a list of these countries together with the part of a patent that needs to be translated, and the language it is ought to be translated to.

Country Part to translate Language of translation
Albania Claims Albanian
Specification English
Austria Specification German
Bulgaria Specification Bulgarian
Croatia Claims Croatian
Specification English
Greece Specification Greek
Czechia Specification Czech
Denmark Claims Danish
All other parts English or Danish
Estonia Specification Estonian
Finland Claims Finnish
All other parts English or Finnish;
Swedish, if the patentee’s own language is Swedish
Greece Specification Greek;
IMPORTANT: The translation must be certified to be accepted, so it is advisable to order a certified translation
Hungary Claims Hungarian
All other parts English or Hungarian
Iceland Claims Icelandic
All other parts English or Icelandic
Italy Specification Italian;
IMPORTANT: The official EPO guidelines state that the patent translation “must give a declaration [..] that the translation is in complete agreement with the original”. The form of the declaration is not clarified, which is why it is highly recommended to order a certified translation
Latvia Claims Latvian
Lithuania Claims Lithuanian
Netherlands Claims Dutch
All other parts English or Dutch
North Macedonia Claims Macedonian
Norway Claims Norwegian
Title, description, drawings English or Norwegian
Poland Specification Polish
Portugal Specification Portuguese
Romania Specification Romanian
San Marino Description, claims Italian;
IMPORTANT: The translation must be certified to be accepted, so it is advisable to order a certified translation
Serbia Specification Serbian
Slovakia Specification Slovak
Slovenia Claims Slovene
Spain Specification Spanish
Sweden Claims Swedish
All other parts English or Swedish
Turkey Specification Turkish

European countries not on the above list do not require any additional translations, as at least one of their official languages correspond to the accepted languages of EPO, that is, French, German or English.

  • Belgium;
  • France;
  • Germany;
  • Ireland;
  • Liechtenstein;
  • Luxembourg;
  • Malta;
  • Monaco;
  • Switzerland;
  • United Kingdom.
