Japanese patent languages
The single official language recognized by JPO is Japanese. Accordingly, the best option is to translate all the relevant documents into Japanese. It ensures that the authorities can proceed with reviewing your application without spending time considering if it complies with the details of JPO‘s language policy.
There are, however, cases, when the use of other languages is permitted. Article 36-2 of the Japanese Patent Act allows initially submitting a special document in a foreign language instead of the description, claims and drawings. That being said, all these texts still needs to be translated into Japanese, just at a later date.
It is noteworthy that in some cases the translation is given precedent when evaluating the validity of an application. Article 6.3.2 of the Overview of Foreign Language Written Application System states that When the translation [..] satisfies the substantive requirements of the patent application [..], even if foreign language document does not satisfy the substantive requirements, it is considered that the patent application based on utility model registration has been lawfully made
