Korean patent languages
The single official language recognized by KIPO is Korean. Accordingly, the best option is to translate all the relevant documents into Korean. It ensures that the authorities can proceed with reviewing your application without spending time considering if it complies with the details of KIPO‘s language policy.
There are, however, cases, when the use of other languages is permitted. Article 42-3 of the Korean Patent Act allows initially submitting the specification and drawing of a patent in a foreign language. That being said, it still needs to be translated into Korean, just at a later date.
Related agencies and patents
KIPO covers only the territory of South Korea, leaving more than 190 other jurisdictions unaccounted for. If you are interested in registering your invention in other states, see our page about translation services for other patent agencies.
